India’s Growing Agri Exports

India is one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of agricultural products. With its vast and varied agro-climatic zones, the country is well-positioned to produce a wide range of crops and food grains.

According to Economic Survey for 2023-24, India is the second largest producer in rice, wheat, cotton, among other crops, and the largest producer of milk, pulses and spices. The top crop producing states in India are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh.

India’s agricultural exports have shown consistent growth over the years, contributing substantially to the national economy and rural development. The country has diversified its agricultural export portfolio, moving beyond traditional products like rice, tea and spices. The export of non-traditional items such as fruits, vegetables, processed foods, and organic products has increased, catering to global demands for healthy and sustainable food options.

With the global shift towards organic and sustainable farming, India has capitalized on its traditional agricultural practices. The export of organic products from India has seen a sharp rise, catering to the growing demand in Europe, the USA and other developed markets.

According to WTO Trade Statistics 2023, India is currently the eighth largest exporter of agricultural products in the world. Agriculture and allied products worth US$ 48.8 billion was exported in 2023-24.
